Don’t Wait For The Next Hurricane Or Hailstorm To Protect Yourself With Solar Energy

You can actually prevent damage to your home and keep your lights on during the next severe storm. Be prepared for hailstorms and hurricanes the best you can by keeping your energy going even when the power grid is down.

When you consider that many crises during severe weather events (like Hurricane Dorian) revolve around loss of power, the durability and accessibility of solar energy can be critical for every homeowner.

Solar panels on your home could mean the difference that keeps you going like normal even when the world’s turned upside down during severe weather occurrences.

If you live in an area that experiences extreme weather like storms, hurricanes, blizzards, etc., solar panels can help keep you going when the power grid is down for weeks.

In some states, concerns about hurricanes, high winds, and heavy hail storms haunt homeowners.

So why do these states have some of the best solar capacity and installation?

Simply because solar panels are incredibly durable when it comes to extreme weather.

We’ve seen Hurricane Irma, Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Dorian, and many other storms do some damage to homes. However, when Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey, a state with one of the highest solar capacities in the U.S., researchers and analysts found little to no damage to the 103-MW of PV solar panels they had installed before the storm.

In fact, the damage from the hurricane amounted to a couple panels coming loose and some damage to metal casings. Very minimal.

Consider Puerto Rico’s Hurricane Maria and the devastation it brought; you’d think much more damage would occur to solar arrays. However, San Juan’s VA Hospital had a 645-kW solar panel system (installed 2015) that went unaffected by the 180 mph winds. The solar array continued to operate at full capacity after the storm.

Part of what made the hospital’s solar panel system so durable was the anchoring and racking devices which kept the panels flexible enough to work with the stress of the weather rather than against it.

Loss of power can create a lot of stress in communication, food duration, and financial loss. It can greatly impact communities by impacting organizations such as hospitals and aid.

Solar energy lends a survivalist edge and can help keep a community going when it’s experienced a disaster.

To stay perfectly clear of any misunderstanding, solar panels aren’t what stands between devastation and protection.

Can it protect you from the type of devastation Hurricane Dorian brought on the Bahamas? No. Absolutely not. Unfortunately not much can.

Can it protect you from going powerless and losing food and outside connection as fast? Yes.

Solar energy gives communities and your home the edge it really needs in a disaster.

How Do Solar Panels Do In A Hail Storm?

After high winds, the next obvious question would be how do solar panels hold up under hailstorms and debris?

Golden, Colorado endured a severe hailstorm in 2017. This hailstorm broke car windows, dented vehicles, and messed up roofs—not a small storm.

After the hailstorm, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) analyzed the damage. Their solar panels (around 2.5 megawatts PV power) are on or adjacent to the roof of the research facility. So, the panels had plenty of exposure to the storm. Out of the 3,000 solar panels in the NREL array, only a single panel was broken.

Only one panel was damaged. It appeared that this single solar panel was struck in a concentrated spot with several hailstones until the surface glass was cracked.

While hail is a force of nature to be reckoned with, hailstorms don’t really seem to have much on solar panels. In fact, they may even protect your roof from the damage it would have taken without the solar panels to cover them.

Frequently Asked Questions about Solar:

Q: What is the ITC?

A: The Federal Government in the year 2019 will pay for 30% of your solar cost. That's like the Federal Government paying 30% of your electric bill for the next 30 years.

Q: Is there a solar program that is 100% free?

A: No. There are programs without any enrollment, install, or maintenance costs. However, you still have to pay the lower power bill that comes accompanied with your electricity use.

Q: What energy efficient program offers the most savings?

A: Solar offers massive savings to the homeowner. Especially as electric rates tend to rise year after year, and homeowners are using more power as they are adding in home automation, tvs, speakers, etc.
